The State of California

is finalizing plans to recognize
THREE High School Equivalency Tests

  • GED:  Already in use, the 2014 GED consists of a battery of 4 sub-tests (Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, Social Studies) and is currently a completely computer-based test ("CBT".)  
  • HiSET: Recently approved by California and several other states, the HiSet, or High School Equivalency Test, measures 5 sub-test areas (Language Arts-Reading, Language Arts-Writing, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) and will be offered as a paper-based test ("PBT") as well as a computer-based test ("CBT").
  • TASC: In the final approval stages, the TASC, or Test Assessing Secondary Completion, will measure 5 sub-test areas (Language Arts-Reading, Language Arts-Writing, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies) and will be offered as a paper-based test ("PBT") as well as a computer-based test ("CBT").
